On 6/23/2000, Roy & I went to Tate Cemetery. It was grown over and neglected. Most of the tombstones were unreadable, and many looked like they had never been inscribed. I looked for Columbus' tomb, but was unable to locate it specifically. However, Roy found one inscribed Mrs. C. Tate. Hopefully, this is either Matilda or Catherine and that Columbus in next to her. bullet Dovie TATE was born on 13 Oct 1921 in Yardell, Newton, Arkansas. This is an email correspondence I recieved on 6/14/00 from Betty (Guthrie) McCollum (betmac@centurytel.net).

My cousin, Sue Chrisco, and I, interviewed Hoyt and Dovie Jackson in October of 1998. Here is what Dovie says about her parents and this should answer your question:

"My daddy was GEORGE W. TATE and his daddy was COLUMBUS TATE. They were buried down here in Independence County, somehwere. I was raised away from there and I don't knkow much about them. Stanley Tate at Wiseman is my brother. My dad was about sixty years old when I was born and my mother died before I was two years old and my dad raised all four children by himself. I reckon he made it alright. My dad was married twice but had no children by the first wife. His first wife was MARTHA EVANS and my mother's name was BELLE EVANS. They were related but I don't know how.I don't know much about them. The first time he married he was down here at Mt. Pleasant (Izard County) and I don't know anything about that except they didn't have any chidlren and she didn't live long. My sisters and brother was Opal, Stanley, Ross and I. I grew up around Wiseman. We moved to Mississippi County and lived down there about a year. My dad was too old to work but the boys could work down there. Then my dad said he didn't want to die down there in that damp country so we movbed back to Myron and he died about a year after we moved up there. He died on Christmas day in 1936 and that left me a complete orphan. Then Hoyt and I married in July of 1937. After my dad died I lived with my sister Opal for awhile and with Stanley for awhile. Ross was in CC Camp in Oregon and I wrote and asked Ross to come home but he didn't come home, so we never did move out. We lived with Opal till me and Hoyt married. Then Ross went to the "bottoms" and a shart time later he married."
(Hoyt & Dovie's interview will be in mine and my cousin's next book, Down Memory Lane #2, which should be out within another week, hopefully. -===================================================-

bullet Isaac TATE died in Dec 1839 in Tennessee. He was buried in Dec 1839 in Paint Rock (Baptist) Meeting House Cemetary, Roane, Tennessee. ~This is a post by Bill Tate on Genforum:
I am looking for any information on Isaac Tate of east Tenn. He is on the tax rolls around 1800. He died in December 1839 and is buried at Paint Rock meeting House Cemetary,Roane Co. He served with Booth's 5th. East Tennessee Militia in 1814 and 1815 and was discharged in Blount county, Tenn in May 1815. He had a son William C. Tate that moved to Arkansas in 1820. Any information will be helpful.

~Isaac appears in the 1830 census of Roane Co, Tennessee on page 10. As of 6/21/2000 I have not had a chance to look up the physical census, just got the information online. However, he doesn't appear in the 1840 census, so that confirms the death date being 1839 or before.

Notes on Isaac's regiment in the War of 1812:
COLONEL EDWIN BOOTH

DESIGNATION: 5th Regiment of East Tennessee Militia
DATES: November 1814 - May 1815
MEN MOSTLY FROM: Knox, Blount, Sevier, Anderson, Bledsoe, Hawkins, Rhea, and Roane Counties
CAPTAINS: Alexander Biggs, John Lewis, Wilson Maples, Richard Marshall, John McKamy, John Porter, Miles Vernon, John Sharp, John Slatton, Samuel Thompson, George Winton
BRIEF HISTORY:
Along with the Fourth Regiment of Colonel Samuel Bayless and Colonel William Johnson's Third Regiment, this regiment was part of the division under the command of Major General William Carroll. These units were sent to the vicinity of Mobile to protect that region from Indian and/or British offensive activities.
The regiment was organized at Knoxville and their line of march took them to Lookout Mountain (present-day Chattanooga), to Fort Strother, and finally to Mobile. Many of the men may have been stationed at Camp Mandeville, a military post located outside of Mobile. Most of the companies were dismissed at Mobile at the end of the war. Parents: William TATE.

bullet William ~Chapman~ TATE was born about 1799. The article on William C. Tate mentioned as source in many of the Tate entries lists several descendents of William still living including Alice Tate Haley of Batesville, a great-granddaughter, and Alpha Johnson of Locust Grove who descends from two of William's sons, Joseph and Lum.

~William appears in the 1830 census of Roane Co, Tennessee on page 10. This information could disprove the date mentioned in the article on William written by Wanda Clark. The article states that William left Tennessee in 1820. As of 6/21/2000 I have not had a chance to look up the physical census; just got the information online. However, he doesn't appear in the 1840 census.

This is from an email correspondence received from Lanky501@aol.com:
William C. Tate was born abt. 1789 in TN. He served in the War of 1812 with one of his future sons-in-law, Martin Penter. They came together into Ark. where my Hess family had already settled. There was already a connection between them with my Hess family, but am not certain what that was as yet. William was the father of my gr-great grandmother, Elizabeth Tate Hess, and she named her first son after him (my great-grandfather, William Chapman Hess) so I think we can safely assume that her father's middle initial "C" stood for Chapman. The senior William had several wives and so far, all I can find out about Elizabeth's mother is that she was known as "the widow of David Bowerman"... William's land was located in Sec.1,Twp.14 North, Range 8 West, near the present town of Cushman. Most of the men in the Arkansas Mounted Rangers (in which William served) received bounty land in later years. William's father was Isaac Tate, a TN planter and also a militiaman. He served in the War of 1812, with the East TN Militia. As I said, I do have a copy of Isaac's Will and would be happy to send it to you, as well as copies of what pictures I have - will you do the same? Children born to Isaac Brookfield Hess and Elizabeth Tate Hess were: William Chapman, b.1846 in AR - married Martha Matilda Cartwright Elizabeth Jane, b.1848 in AR, married John Cartwright (bro. of above Martha) John, b.1849 in AR - married Lucinda Whitfield
Thomas J. born 1854 in AR - married Mary E. Cummings James M. b. 1858 in AR - married Margaret Reeves.

In reseach conducted in the Melbourne Library, in Izard County, Arkansas on 6/23/2000, I found an entry with William C. Tate in the 1840 census of Independence County. Accourding to that census, there were two women between the ages of 20 & 30 living in the household (unfortunately that year, all the census had was number of people in a certain age, no individual ages listed). This has raised a new question as to the mother of William's children. All that is known about his wife at the time he came to Arkansas is that she was the widow of David Bowerman. I know by the birth dates provided in the article on William that his oldest daughter, Susan, was one of these women between ages 20 & 30. She would have been 20 in 1840. Now, who is the other? Maybe William's wife was in that age range also, but if she was, she would not have been able to be the mother of all of the children. Does this mean that William was married previously and widowed? If so, who was the other wife?

On 6/25/2000 I received an email from Lanky501@aol.com that says that the Penters that came to Arkansas with William C. Tate were later known as the Painters, as in Painters Bluff in Cushman. She says that they are connected but at this point is not sure how. She said that in Isaac's will, he left some property to one of the Penters. Parents: Isaac TATE and Jemimah BRICKEY.

Subject: Jacob Campbell and Mary (Teal) Campbell of Barbour county, Alabama

Posted by: Glenn Teal
Message: I am seeking information on my 3G grandathers daughter and her husband. She was named Polly Teal (possibly short for Mary).I believe that she was probably born in the 1830's. She married a Jacob Campbell and lived in Barbour county Al. Jacob may have been called "Jake". There was a marriage on 6 December 1849 of a Jacob Campbell to a Mary Teal. The years seem to be correct and I wonder if this is my Polly and Jacob her husband! There is a Jacob Campbell listed in the tomb records of Barbour county Al. also. He is listed as being buried in a cemetery on the "Old Grice Place". I have been told that this cemetery used to be called the Holland cemetery as their are several Hollands there. This Jacob Campbell is listed as being a civil war veteran.. His unit is listed as Co. B. 57th Ala. Inf. Does anyone out there have any information on this Jacob. I hope that someone out there has information on him that can help me determine if this is my Jacob that married Polly. This cemetery, I have been told no longer exists. I am seeking information on Jacob and Polly's family and descendants, as well as Jacobs ancestors. If anyone has any information on this please reply and email me. I would like to share. Thanks.

Children were: James Henry CAMPBELL.
